* Irvington has a new afterschool music program operated by Chris Gabriel from Musik Haus – the same excellent instructor teaching our daytime music enrichment program. Since this is a new offering and we are very excited about the program, PTA wants to help make this available to more families. The PTA has a budget of $1000 to help subsidize this music program for the winter 2012 session.
The price of the class is $100 per student, however, you can use the following guidelines to choose a sliding scale fee. This is based on the honor system (Musik Haus will manage all fees confidentially): Income below $50,000 – $50 per student; income between $50,000-$75,000 – $75 per student; $75,000 and above income – $100 fee. Families who qualify for free and reduced lunch also qualify for our existing scholarship program. See the flyer from Musik Haus for class descriptions.
The PTA provides scholarships for ALL fee-based extracurricular activity offered at Irvington. All students who qualify for free or reduced lunches also qualify for PTA Scholarships. Scholarship forms are available in front of the office.
Please note: Some classes may have a minimum number of students requirement. The schedule above is for new classes; Spanish, Chess & Go Club, MUSE, and Arnerich Massena classes continue throughout the year. If you have any activities you would like to see at the school, please contact Rachel Carlson at rachelabra@msn.com.
Chess + Go Club
Irvington’s Chess + Go Club has over thirty 2nd-5th graders eager to learn and practice chess and go skills. Volunteers are needed to supervise, encourage, and share strategies with students. Knowledge of chess and go is desirable but NOT required! Contact: Jessica Nesseler-Cass, drjessnd@gmail.com.
Lego Club
Lego Robotics is a perenially popular after-school club that relies on parent volunteers. If possible, the club is split up into two groups: 3-5th graders and 6th-8th graders. Volunteers are requested to be present 1 day every other week. Volunteers will get free training, a guaranteed spot in the club for their kids and the satisfaction of creating future engineers! Contact: Volunteer needed!
Fractals Math Team
The Fractals is Irvington’s award-winning competitive math team. In 2010-11 they took second place in the state! It is open to any 7th or 8th grader interested in having fun with math. It meets on Tuesdays from 3:30 – 4. Snacks and awesome team sweatshirts provided. Contact: Kitty Haglund, khaglund@pps.net.
Family Gym Nights
When the weather gets cold and rainy, it’s time for Family Gym Night! Starting the first Wednesday in November, the gym is open to the Irvington community to encourage families to get active and play together. Wednesday nights from 6 – 8 p.m. Contact: Charles Barker, cbarker@easystreet.net.
Scrabble Club
Are you a 4th – 8th grader who is a word person? Do you want to increase your vocabulary, improve your spelling, use your math skills, and most importantly, have fun? If you answered yes, Irvington’s Scrabble Club is for you. The Club meets on Monday school days from 3:15-4:15 p.m. from Nov. 7 – June 3. Contact: Donna Hughey, dmhughey@comcast.net or leave a note in the SMART mailbox in the office.
Sports Teams
Irvington School does not have its own sports teams, but students at Irvington take part in a variety of sports through regional leagues. For example, soccer teams for all ages are organized through the Portland Youth Soccer Association (PYSA). Our local club is the Irvington Soccer Club, www.irvingtonsoccer.com.
Other sports teams are organized by Portland Parks & Recreation, the Portland Tennis Center, the Northeast Community Center, www.necommunitycenter.org, the Blazers Boys and Girls Club, www.bgcportland.org, Eastside Portland Lacrosse, www.eastsideportlandlacrosse.com, various little leagues (Hollywood, Wilshire/Riverside, or Peninsula, depending on where you live), the Portland Aquatic Club, www.swimpac.org, and many other organizations.
Many teams need volunteer coaches and/or referees. Contact them to help. Your child won’t miss a game if you’re the coach!
Volleyball
Middle schoolers (6-8th grade) learn how to serve, bump, set, spike and dig, and play scrimmage matches during fun, free volleyball Fridays. Led by the Irvington Blue Lightning team and coaches, this parent-run program is Fridays from 6 – 7:30 p.m. Contact: Glen Gilbert, glen@thegilbert4.com.
